Community Service Programs at Work

Welcome to Straits Area Services, a private, nonprofit, Community Rehabilitation Organization empowering people with developmental disabilities to realize their full potential.  We have been in business since 1976 providing community integration, supported employment, skill building, rehabilitative training, business support, work enclaves, and more, to our clients and to our community.  Additionally, Straits Area Services spreads over three-quarters of a million dollars annually (almost $870,000 in 2010) back into Cheboygan’s local economy through payroll, and through the goods and services we provide.

Service Programs

Our services include a “Community Integration” program which provides opportunities for our clients to learn about, and participate as contributing members of, their community.  There is also a vocational component to our program that provides options for clients to explore employment opportunities as well as obtain employment.

Local Business Support

Straits Area Services provides light assembly services and paper shredding services to area businesses.  We also facilitate job-site work enclaves.  One enclave we support is located at the Emmet County Department of Public Works recycling center in Harbor Springs, Michigan. Our crew sorts paper, cardboard, glass and plastic for the center and has done this successfully for the past nine years.
